Prospective NROTC StudentsThe NROTC program at Oklahoma University serves to commission young men and women as officers in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. A career in the Navy or Marine Corps is guaranteed to be an exciting experience, and there are many ways to serve. The NROTC program primarily commissions students into one of several warfare communities: Aviation, Submarines, Surface Warfare, Navy Special Operations (SEALS, EOD), the Nurse Corps, or the Marine Corps. Navy Option students decide which career path to choose in their senior year of college, while Marine Corps Option students select their career path after completion of The Basic School (TBS). Additional information about each community is available at the Navy Officer Careers section of the official Navy website, and at the official Marine Corps Officer website. The NROTC program offers several different scholarships for prospective students. Most NROTC students apply for a scholarship while still in high school via the Navy's Official NROTC website. However, if you are a college Freshman or Sophomore, you can apply directly via our Recruiting Officer. For enlisted Navy personnel, the Seaman to Admiral (STA-21) program is the appropriate application path. Enlisted Marines Corps personnel should apply for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP). (Additional information about officer programs for Marine enlisted personnel is also available at the Marine Corps Recruiting Command website.) The University of Oklahoma offers many different degrees and is rated one of the best value schools for your money. There are no restrictions on choice of major for students in the NROTC program, but the Navy does encourage prospective officers to pursue technical or engineering degrees, if possible. Several NROTC students take advantage of OU's Aviation Major, and earn their private pilot's license while pursuing their Bachelor's Degree. The NROTC program even pays for the additional fees that come with aviation classes. This adds up to several thousand dollars on top of normal tuition each semester!! Aside from the many advantages offered by the University of Oklahoma, there are many benefits to the NROTC program at OU. The most important benefit that you as a future officer will receive is the development of your leadership skills. The program is designed to ensure that prior to you receiving a commission in the Navy or Marine Corps, you have the skills required to lead. Additionally, the NROTC unit provides opportunities for travel, as members of the unit participate in numerous drill competitions; rifle and pistol team competitions, and participate in the annual OU vs Texas run. As a prospective student, you should visit the University of Oklahoma Financial Aid office to find out about additional scholarship opportunities that are available through the university. Some scholarships will pay for room and board, which is important because this expense is NOT covered by the NROTC scholarship. For prospective students on a limited budget, the combination of university-provided Financial Aid with an NROTC scholarship can drastically reduce or eliminate the financial expenses of a college education.
